Hmmm, what’s that noise? Knockety, knock! Pistons calling!
[Update] We dropped it at the Subaru dealer. Unfortunately, the service department was closed I had a sales manager and a sales guy come out and look at the oil level. I believe the words the sales guy used were, “Holy crap, that’s a lot of oil!” They couldn’t understand why their own techs would put in so much oil.
The sales guy was particularly upset since it’s a hatch. He stayed outside talking to me until my ride arrived, all the time lamenting about how he should have bought a hatch while they were still being made.
I’ll update again tomorrow once I hear back from them.
[Update 2] Awaiting confirmation from the master tech, but the service advisor says it is a known problem which requires a replacement long block. They gave me a loaner to use until the repairs are complete.

I can understand shady mechanics, but how does a dealer mechanic make this kind of mistake?
I am legitimately sorry for you. If this had happened to me I would have gone straight ballistic.

Can you get knock from over filling oil?
TheTurbochargedSquirrel

Looks like it may have been filled to the point where the oil was aerated by the crank. Do you have an oil pressure gauge in the car? Hopefully it wasn’t oil starved to the point of doing damage.

Sometimes the oil can be overfilled to the point that it is aerated by the crankshaft. The oil pump can’t pump oil which is full of air so you can sometimes starve the engine.

It would be frothy and aerated if that was the cause. I’m a Subaru tech, they’re just crappy engines

If the oil was overfilled enough to aerate the oil then the oil would be bubbly and light colored. I’m a Subaru tech, they just make shit engines

Gotta love subaru engines... Thats why we stay away from them at my performance shop.
Also you can make way more power out of a 4g63 stock anyway
